Porcelain vs composite: the key decision

Full comparison
Porcelain
  • $$800-$2,500 per tooth
  • +Most natural look, resists staining
  • +10-20 year lifespan
  • +Lab-made, custom color matched
  • -Requires 0.5mm enamel removal (irreversible)
  • -2-3 appointments over 2-4 weeks
  • -Cannot be repaired, must be replaced
Composite
  • $$250-$1,500 per tooth
  • +Done in a single appointment
  • +Less enamel removal
  • +Can be repaired if chipped
  • -5-7 year lifespan
  • -Can stain (coffee, red wine)
  • -Less natural-looking than porcelain
Bottom line: Porcelain is better. Composite is cheaper. If your budget is tight and the issue is minor, dental bonding at $100-$400 per tooth might be enough.

How many do you actually need?

Canine to canine. Covers every tooth visible in a full smile. The most common choice.

Full makeover

8-12 veneers

Includes premolars and beyond. Full smile makeover for a complete transformation.

$6,400-$30,000

Your dentist will create a digital mock-up so you can see the result before any enamel is touched. Do not skip this step.

The process: what actually happens

1

Consultation and digital design

Your dentist photographs your teeth, takes impressions, and builds a digital mock-up. You approve the color and shape before anything is removed. Budget 1-2 hours.

2

Tooth preparation

About 0.5mm of enamel is buffed off the front surface of each tooth. This is permanent. Local anesthetic is used. Temporary veneers are fitted the same day.

3

Temporary veneers (1-2 weeks)

You wear temps while the lab makes your final porcelain shells. They look fine but are fragile. Avoid hard or sticky food during this period.

4

Final placement

The lab-made veneers are checked for fit and color. Any adjustments are made, then each one is bonded permanently. A UV light cures the adhesive. Done.

Total time: 2-3 appointments over 2-4 weeks. Some practices offer same-day veneers with in-house milling (Cerec), which skips the temporary stage.

Dental tourism: the cheaper option

Turkey

$250-$500/tooth

Istanbul is the most popular destination

Mexico

$350-$600/tooth

Los Algodones and Tijuana cater to US patients

Colombia

Thailand

$350-$600/tooth

Bangkok and Phuket. Good for combining with a trip

Honest take: Cheaper, yes. But no warranty, travel costs add up, and if something goes wrong you fly back. Reasonable for composite. Higher risk for porcelain where fit and color matching matter most.

Will they last?

Porcelain veneers

  • +10-20 year lifespan with good care
  • +Highly stain-resistant
  • +Individual veneers can be replaced
  • -Cannot be repaired if cracked, only replaced
  • -Grinding (bruxism) significantly reduces lifespan

Composite veneers

  • +5-7 year lifespan
  • +Can be repaired and polished
  • +Easier to update the color
  • -Stains from coffee, tea, red wine
  • -Chips more easily
To make them last: wear a night guard if you grind, avoid biting nails or hard food (ice, hard candy), and get annual check-ups. Smokers should expect shorter lifespans.

Common questions

Do veneers hurt?

The preparation appointment uses local anesthetic, so there is no pain during the procedure. You may have some sensitivity for a few days after enamel removal, particularly to cold. This settles once the final veneers are bonded.

Are veneers covered by insurance?

No. Veneers are cosmetic and not covered by dental insurance in the US or by the NHS in the UK. Some dentists offer 0% interest financing over 12 months. Dental savings plans (not insurance) can give 10-20% off.

Can you get veneers on just 2 or 3 teeth?

Yes. If only specific teeth are damaged or discolored you can veneer just those. The challenge is color matching. Porcelain can be very precisely matched; your dentist will do trial runs before committing.

What is the difference between veneers and bonding?

Bonding uses the same composite material as composite veneers but is applied free-hand to repair or slightly reshape a tooth. It costs $100-$400 per tooth and takes one short visit. For minor chips or small gaps it can be just as good as a veneer at a fraction of the cost.
